This is the British companion to our global costs page — same method, sterling figures, UK market notes. Every number is an order of magnitude for orientation; the auction you actually face depends on your sector, your quality score and your timing. Treat the table as a starting hypothesis, then write your own row.

Paid clicks in the UK auctions

Google’s UK auctions behave like other mature Western markets: unglamorous long-tail queries in the tens of pence, consumer services higher, and the familiar stratosphere in legal, finance and B2B software. VAT sits on top of everything, and management fees — whether agency percentage or internal time — belong in the honest total, per the decoder on our services page.

The fully-loaded cost of organic, in Britain

The same three lines as the global page, at UK prices. Production: one strong guide is two to four days of a skilled person — £600 to £3,000 at the rates above, whether you buy it or make it yourself. Tooling: the small-team stack in the table, roughly £2,000 to £5,000 a year. Patience: the compounding curve shows in quarters two and three, and the British market’s seasonality (the pre-Christmas quarter, the January reassessment) rewards whoever is still publishing through both. Our working rule from the global page holds: organic is cheap per session and expensive per month of doubt — budget the doubt.

UK market notes

  • Retainers cluster. Monthly SEO retainers in Britain cluster between £1,000 and £4,000 for SMEs; below that, expect activity reporting rather than strategy.
  • London weighting is real but bounded. Day rates run perhaps twenty to thirty per cent higher inside the M25; remote-first practices have flattened the rest.
  • VAT and contracts. Compare quotes ex-VAT, and prefer providers who will agree outcome definitions in writing — the questions on our decoder page are designed for exactly that conversation.

Reading the ranges

Two habits make a table like this useful rather than misleading. First, read ranges as distributions, not menus: the top of the CPC band is what the competitive end of a sector pays after quality scores have been earned, and new advertisers should expect to visit those prices before optimising down towards the middle. Second, re-check before committing: the ranges on this page are refreshed quarterly, and the auction you face moves monthly. Where a range and your own data disagree, your data wins — the page is the hypothesis, your account is the experiment.

A pound spent on clarity about what you are buying beats ten pounds spent on the wrong thing confidently.

For the mechanics behind these line items, see the vehicles of traffic; for choosing what to spend on at all, the global keyword research guide. And when a quote arrives that fits none of these ranges comfortably, treat the outlier as information: either the provider sees something about your situation you have not described to them, or they have priced a conversation you did not ask to have. Both are worth knowing before the contract, not after.
